An exciting and athletic festival, the Cairns Airport Adventure Festival is set in one of the most iconic tropical destinations in the world and takes place annually in June. Set in the stunning backdrop of Cairns at the gateway to the World Heritage listed Great Barrier Reef, the pinnacle of the Cairns Airport Adventure Festival is the IRONMAN Asia-Pacific Championship Cairns. A gruelling triathlon, the IRONMAN Championship features a 3.8km swim as well as a 180km bike leg toward Port Douglas travelling along one of Australia’s most scenic coastal roads. The full-distance triathlon concludes with a 42.2km run along a course that takes competitors along the iconic Cairns Esplanade before ending in the heart of Cairns.
The triathlon attracts competitors from near and far who relish in the chance to compete on one of the most spectacular courses in the world. Racers follow the Captain Cook Highway which hugs the coastline from Cairns to Port Douglas, trying not to get too distracted by the stunning views. From the reef to the spectacular rainforest of the Daintree and along the picturesque Cairns boardwalk, the course concludes in the heart of the city and is a must-do race on the IRONMAN circuit.
