Getting Around Hawaii

Hawaii transport is widely considered excellent, offering a number of options depending on where you're visiting. Car hire is a popular way to get around Hawaii at your own convenience however there are plenty of other easy and affordable Hawaii transport options. Taxis are readily available and there is also a great public transport system on the islands of Hawaii.

If you do wish to rent a car as your Hawaii transport, there are a number of major hire companies located on the island including Thrifty, Avis, Hertz, Alamo, National and Budget. Many airports and hotels feature service desks where you can make hire car arrangements. Taxis are available on all the islands, with hotel service desks able to order you a car. Most major resorts also offer complimentary or highly discounted shuttle services within the local area so it's well worth checking with your concierge.

Hawaiian Airlines are the primary carrier for inter-island travel, where each island runs their own Hawaii transport systems. Oahu is home to 'The Bus', an award-winning public transport system twice named 'America's Best Transit System'. There are 93 routes and 4,200 bus stops that service the entire island. Another popular way to get around Oahu is the Waikiki Trolley which delivers passengers to a number of the island's most popular attractions including Bishop Museum, the Waikiki Aquarium, Iolani Palace, King Kamehameha Statue and more.

On Maui, the Maui Bus Public Transit System services the upcountry, south, central, west and Haiku 7 days a week. There is also a commuter service to assist in peak hour. On Kaua'i, the Kaua'i Bus services Kekaha to Hanalei, offering discounts to seniors and children. On the Big Island, the Hele-On Bus offers a complimentary island-wide passenger service on scheduled routes. There are no municipal bus services on the islands of Lanai or Molokai.
