Port Douglas Weather & Climate

Characterised by its sub tropical climate, Port Douglas has two distinct seasons; a Winter period of warm temperatures and low rainfall, known as the "dry season" and a Summer period of balmy temperatures and high rainfall, known as the "wet season".

The dry season begins in May and finishes in October offering plenty of sunshine, lovely cool breezes and relatively low humidity. The wet season extends from November to April and refreshes the region with tropical rainstorms often in the afternoon and occasional electrical storms.

Port Douglas weather averages 25°C to 30°C all year round. Ocean water temperatures are also warm, averaging at 23°C in July and up to 29°C in February, making it the perfect place for year-round swimming and snorkelling the Great Barrier Reef. Port Douglas beaches are safe for swimming and lifeguards patrol the main swimming areas. Jellyfish nets are also erected at popular beaches to protect swimmers.

Port Douglas is a wonderful place to visit all year round. However, the region experiences increased temperatures and rainfall during the wet season from December through to February. So keep this in mind when booking your Summer holiday. While the tropical showers are typically heavy, they do not last long and there are usually plenty of sunshine periods during these months.

Port Douglas' beautiful weather means the days are warm and sunny and the tropical atmosphere is very relaxed. While your holiday attire will consist mainly of swimwear, a light jacket or jumper may be required for evenings during the cooler months.
