Located in the heart of the Sunshine Coast, the Mooloolaba Triathlon is a sporting festival that has been one of the feature events of the Australian Triathlon calendar for more than 20 years. Featuring open water swimming, cycling and running legs of the race, the Mooloolaba Triathlon has been held on beautiful Mooloolaba Beach since 1993.
A multi-sport festival held over three days in March, the Mooloolaba Triathlon is the centrepiece of the festival. The event caters to participants of all age groups and abilities and the triathlon has grown into Australia’s second largest triathlon event to cover Olympic distance. The Mooloolaba Triathlon attractions elite sports men and women from throughout Australia and all over the world but also provides an opportunity for less elite athletes to have a go.
The triathlon begins with a one lap 1500m swim in the waters off Mooloolaba Beach before progressing with a 40km one lap cycle out and back along an undulating course and finishes with a 10km two lap run along an undulating course along the Mooloolaba Esplanade. As part of the triathlon festival, the International Triathlon Union Mooloolaba Triathlon World Cup is held as the only Australian leg of the World Cup Series. Attracting thousands of spectators, the top athletes in the world race each other for a prize pool in the hundred thousands.
An electric buzz descends on the town of Mooloolaba each year when the triathlon comes to town as there is always something for the whole family to enjoy as part of the festivities. Some of the highlights of the festivals including the Superkidz Triathlon, the Special Tri, the Mooloolaba Twilight 5km run and a 1km Ocean Swim.
